Having recently moved back to Vancouver this is going to be my first summer spent here in four whole years! I’m super excited for all the fun things there are to do in this city in summertime- and can’t wait to work my way through the list! Here is my Top Ten…
1.) THE BEACH
Whether it’s Kitsilano, Jericho, Spanish Banks, Wreck, Third…they are all fabulous and they are all fun. Kitsilano- great for those youngins who love to show off their bodies. You will see a plethora of young hot twenty somethings playing beach volleyball and drinking beers (discretely of course!). Jericho is great for walks and is wonderful for bbq’s and fun gatherings. Spanish Banks is great if you want less people and more privacy and hey if you want to get naked- head to Wreck! One of the absolute joys of Vancouver is relaxing on the beach while enjoying the Mountainous scenery. Where else can you even do that!?
Trust me- it’s much fun as it sounds. Rollercoasters, cotton candy, carousels, toy stalls you name it- fun for the family and friends alike. Go for a whole day or even just an evening (when its cooler, less crowded and cheaper!)
The Pacific National Exhibition runs in conjunction with Playland and opens up for the last two weeks of August. Extra rides, amazing food, lottery homes and special shows and summer nights concerts round the clock brings an extra ooph to the otherwise fun Playland. My favourite show? The Superdogs! (featured above). Tickets from $14.00.
4.) THEATRE UNDER THE STARS
An absolutely perfect experience for any theatre lovers out there like me! Two raucous musicals running back to back all summer in the midst of the beautiful Stanley Park. Settle in with a blanket and a glass of wine and sit back and enjoy. This summer? Legally Blonde: The Musical and How to Succeed in Business without really Trying. Count me in…
5.) BARD ON THE BEACH
Yet another great summer thespian experience. Shakespeare by the sea! Go and check out four of William’s plays each year throughout the summer in beautful white tents by Jericho beach. This year? Measure for Measure, Twelfth Night, Hamlet and Elizabeth Rex. Already got my tickets…
6.) THE SEA WALL
A staple in Vancouver. Jogging, biking, rollerblading, dog walking, skateboarding- you name it and people are doing it on the sea wall. Take in the gorgeous scenery, get some exercise, and stop for an ice cream along the way!
7.) THE FIREWORKS
One of my absolute favourite things about summer is undoubtedly Vancouver’s Celebration of Lights. Stake out a spot on the beach early and cosy up for an amazing fireworks show. There are three nights in total, running throughout July and August, and each night is hosted by a different country. The winner is announced at the end and concludes with a grand finale of each country’s finest works. Definitely not something to miss! This year? Canada, United Kingdom and Thailand.
The one and only! Party it up Canadian style with the locals by heading downtown and scooping up foam from the fountain outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, join the parade, and head down to Canada Place to watch a grand finale fireworks show to celebrate Canada’s Birthday!
9.) THE FOLK FESTIVAL
The folk festival is held at Jericho Beach every July and is an amalgamation of hippies and locals from around the city. Buy a ticket for one of the evening concerts (this year featuring Macy Gray!!) or stop by and listen to some of the smaller bands free of charge. Bring a blanket, some food and some sunscreen and enjoy the laid back happy atmosphere. You might even find out why certain people are ‘especially’ happy!
Head down to Vancouverite’s favourite area and enjoy live buskers, amazing food and some cute and quirky shops. The area is kid friendly with it’s very own kid market and water park and is an adored place by locals. Check out the market and purchase an array of freshly made and locally produced food, pop into one of the local theatres or comedy clubs, or simply relax and grab a craft beer from one of the patios.
Well that’s it folks! Hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing and better yet I hope you enjoy doing!
Ps- watch this space for Part 2 coming next week!
